In actuality, in 2020, the U.S. government filed a lawsuit against the Chumawah Nation and other Arizona Indian tribes, claiming that they had participated in illegal conduct and desecrated an archaeological site. Among other things, the suit alleged that the Chumawah failed to acquire appropriate permitting and benefits to the gambling area, and didn't allow proper consultation with local and state government officials. An audit was conducted and found that most the tribe's permits were improper, or in violation of state and federal laws. One of those involved in the audit was former State Senator Russell Kelly, who's currently running for a seat in Congress. Russell Kelly is running against incumbent U.S. Rep. John McCain in the upcoming elections.
